Chapter Eight

By the time Aaron and Shay gathered supplies from the Twilight and returned, the other pair had plenty of salvage. Dax assembled their resources in an open area and went to work with his toolkit. Aaron took up a position on the far side of the workspace, away from all the action.

“Don't want to see what they're doing up close and personal?” Addie said.

He smiled. “Nah, I'm too afraid that I'll distract them, or mess something up. Let them do their jobs. They're good at it.”

“At least someone can do their jobs. It's kinda hard to be a sniper when you can barely see more than fifty yards.”

“Yeah, but none of us can sharpshoot like you. It's not just a matter of hitting the target. It's hitting them in the right spot, you know?”

Addie shrugged. “I guess. But I'd prefer open ground over forests.”

“Me too. After that incident with whatever was in the undergrowth...”

“How bad was it?”

“Pretty bad. I didn't notice how strong that thing was until I tried to fight my way out. And I didn't realize how much damage it had done to my leg until I tried to stand up. The other monster probably killed me because of that.”

“Probably better to get trampled than eaten,” Addie said. “But we should probably avoid going near the undergrowth at all costs.”

“Or burn it down.”

“Burning everything down seems like a good idea,” Shay said as she joined them. “Have you looked at the database entries yet?”

“Haven't had a chance,” Aaron said.

“Well, take a look at them. They're interesting. The one about the photac in particular. That's the dinosaur thing that killed us all.”

Aaron opened up the database. “Big, can take a lot of damage, nasty disposition, can heal damage during combat. Sounds like fun.”

“That's not the only thing. Remember the plates on its back? The green ones? Apparently, that's how it's able to regenerate. They're filled with chlorophyll and can absorb sunlight. That's probably how the photac can heal injuries so quickly.”

“So it's some sort of hybrid between an animal and a plant? Is that even possible?”

“As possible as a cyborg, or whatever you want to call the protectors,” Addie said.

Aaron nodded. “Point taken. And they should be vulnerable to all types of fire, not just the incendiary grenades. As long as Ethan and Dax can work their magic.”

“No worries about that. Having two of the best technicians on the galaxy on your team is always a good advantage. I'll take them over a dozen fighters any day,” Shay said.

“Glad to hear you hold us in such high regard,” Ethan called to her.

“Just don't make me regret saying that.”

“Working on it.”

They'd be back in the garden dome soon enough. And once that happened, Aaron would gleefully burn everything in sight.
