Chapter Eighteen
ITâS BEEN TWO WEEKS since Abby spent the night with me. I wish I could say itâs better, but I canât. She still ignores me every day at school, and Iâm still being blocked by Trista and company every time I try to get close to her.
Easton suggested we do something today since we havenât seen much of each other, so we met up with Cooper at the lake for some sun and fishing. Too bad it hasnât quite gone as planned.
The weather isnât cooperating. As soon as we get to the lake, the wind starts to pick up, and clouds roll in to block the sun, making me shiver occasionally despite my jacket. We still fish most of the afternoon, but evening will be setting in soon. Easton and Cooper are having fun, though. Theyâve caught several good bass which they plan on cooking later.
âWe can go to my house as soon as itâs dark,â Cooper offers while re-baiting his line. âMom will fry these right up after you clean âem.â He smiles at Easton and nudges him with his shoulder.
Easton, reeling in another fish, protests. âMe? Who says? Iâve caught more than you, so you have to clean them.â He holds up his latest catch, a big catfish, which slaps its tail against the rolled cuffs of his long-sleeve, navy shirt.
âWe still got an hour or so till dark. I have not yet begun to fight, er, fish.â Coopâs smiling, casting his line.
âKeep dreaminâ, man.â Eastonâs dropping the catfish in Cooperâs huge cooler turned live well. Their humorâs contagious, and I find myself laughing.
He wipes his hands on his ripped jeans and gives me his fishing pole while he takes mine and reels it in to re-bait it for me.
âItâs nice to see you smiling, Vivian.â
âYou donât have to keep doing that you know.â I look up at him.
âDoing what? Re-baiting your line? I donât mind. I actually kinda like it.â Heâs looking out across the lake, but heâs smiling.
âI enjoy taking care of my girlfriend.â I glance up again when he says âgirlfriend.â
âGirlfriend? Hmmmm⦠do I know her?â
Coop shakes his head, grinning slyly. âIâm just gonna scoot on down here a little. I know when to make my exit.â He reels in his line, picks up his chair, and moves down a few hundred yards from us.
Easton lays down the rod and drops to his haunches near my chair so that we are eye level. âYou donât want to be my girlfriend?â He squints at me, looks slightly nervous, and begins picking up and tossing the tiny pebbles on the shore.
âI didnât say that. You never asked me.â Iâm only pretending to give him a hard time. Iâm really so excited Iâm about to burst. In fact, I can feel the tingle in my hand spreading across my whole body.
âSo⦠you want to? Be my girlfriend?â He looks at me, head dropped, through his lashes, and Iâm again awed that this gorgeous boy likes me, the outcast.
