Once in the Senate, Johnson gained more power and responsibility. He made friends with important congressional leaders and quickly improved his social standing. In part because of his great effort, Johnson very swiftly rose in the congressional ranks. In 1951, while still serving his first term in the Senate, Johnson was made the Democratic majority whip, which is generally considered the second most powerful position in the Senate. It was an extraordinary accomplishment for someone so young.
