MEDAL OF HONOR
2010 Microsoft Xbox 360, Electronic Arts
âââ
Neither a sequel nor a remake, Medal of Honor is rather a reboot of the World War II themed series.
After the spectacular success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Electronic Arts canât be blamed for similarly relocating the action from Nazi-occupied Europe to the modern day. However choosing the Afghanistan War as the setting (which was still ongoing at the time of release) did cause some controversy, particularly in multi-player which cast one team as the Taliban and tasked them with killing Coalition forces (as EAâs PR manager explained âIf someoneâs the cop, someoneâs gotta be the robber. In Medal of Honor multi-player someoneâs gotta be the Taliban.â). However after protest from the military EA did change the name Taliban to âOpposing Force,â although this wasnât enough to stop the game being banned from sale on US military bases.
So did the rebooted Medal of Honor jump to the top tier of shooters as EA hoped? The answer is regrettably no. In fact when the superior Call of Duty: Black Ops appeared soon after it highlighted just how far EA were lagging behind.
Still, I did enjoy Medal of Honor. The setting is probably the best thing going for it. The craggy mountain terrain of Afghanistan is well-realized and I really admire the naturalistic lighting of these rugged environments. The gameâs also slower paced than many of its rivals, with the single-player mission offering up time to enjoy the view as you cruise around on an APC or traverse a rocky path to the next objective. Multi-player (which unusually was handled by a completely different development team than the single-player campaign) lends the game a degree of longevity beyond the rather brief single-player, although be warnedâwith overpowered sniper rifles and no kill-cams to see who shot you the game is a camperâs delight.
Also on PS3 and PC.
