“It’s so beautiful,” Daisy says, staring at the night sky.

The sky’s free of clouds, nothing but bright, twinkling constellations of stars on an inky-black background. Cicadas are buzzing. The firepit next to us is crackling, filling the air with warm, smoky smells as we recline in Adirondack chairs and cap off a perfect day.

“Stunning,” I rasp, not taking my eyes off my girl. “Natural beauty.”

I’m staring at Daisy like some people study works of art, admiring the elegant curve of her neck. The way she tugs on her bottom lip with her teeth as she’s thinking. The more I look, the more I discover new details—like the scar below her ear. Every scar has a story, and I wonder how many more of hers I’ve yet to discover.

Daisy sinks deeper into her chair and turns to me. “This weekend has been…” she sighs, her smile faltering. “Special. You’ve treated me so well. No one’s ever done anything like this for me before.”

My jaw clenches as a pang of something—annoyance? Anger?—hits me square in the chest. She deserves the world. I can’t believe no one’s ever treated her like this before.

“Your boyfriend never did anything like this?”

“I’ve never had a boyfriend.”

I can’t believe it. A girl like Daisy? It doesn’t make sense.

“I’ve been on plenty of dates. In and out of college. My mom’s tried to set me up on multiple occasions but none of them...” Her eyes go hazy as I feel her gaze drift to my lips until she finally looks away, grabbing her water and taking a sip.

“Ever worked out?” I ask.

She nods.

I grunt, stretching out before sinking back into my chair. “I know the feeling. I tried dating in college but it wasn’t for me. And once I got into med school, I had no time for anything but work. I wanted someone to light a fire in me. I wanted someone who could stir my soul. I want…”

You. You’re all I want Daisy. What I need.

“Sounds like we’re in the same boat. Although I’m surprised no one snatched you up, Reid.”

I swallow hard. “I’d say the same thing about you.”

She smiles shyly, turning her head back toward the sky.

“I should get to bed,” she says after a few beats, her gaze still focused on the stars. “I need all my energy for my kids. They’re a handful.”

When she stands up, I take a deep breath, filling my lungs with her scent. “I hope Luke’s not giving you any trouble.”

“No. He’s a perfect gentleman.” She leans in, placing her hand on my shoulder, and whispers, “It must run in the family.”

She kisses my cheek and a few seconds later, she disappears inside. I’m not sure how I’ll make it through tomorrow without her.
