Chapter Twenty-One
By the time they reached the healing wards, Rhoaneâs sickness was gone. His head felt light, but that couldâve been due to being exhausted. Kaida and Pora lay curled at the end of the pallet where theyâd put the lycan. She lifted her head at their approach, her great golden eyes filled with concern. The lycan was healing, but seeing the brutality done to him, and remembering what Cashiel had done to Taryn, scared her. Would someone do that to her one day? Were all sentient creatures in danger?
Her questions tumbled through his mind and he did his best to reassure her that she was safe, that she had him and Taryn to protect her, but he understood her worry. Seeing what the lycan had suffered had hurt him in ways he didnât know possible. He, an assassin and prince, a man who had witnessed cruelty on every level, and who had dispensed his fair share of heinous deeds, had recoiled at what had been done to the lycanâmaking him more a beast now than a man.
Rhoane strove to return the male part to his soul, but how was he supposed to do that when it had been all but cauterized? He gave Kaida a pet and scratched Pora beneath his chin, earning a deep purr from the wee beastie. The cat was also worried, but not for the same reasons as Kaida. He promised to keep the catâs secret and also assured him he was protected as long as he stayed close to Theo and Rainne.
Sentient creatures. Wasnât that what they all were? He knelt at the side of the lycan and stroked his silky black fur. Beneath his fingertips, he sensed their combined powers knitting a web of strength that he hoped would be enough to restore him completelyâman and beast.
âThis is Eiodian, our best healer,â Theo said from behind Rhoane.
He gave a last pat to the lycan before rising to greet the healer. When their eyes met, a sense of familiarity rushed through Rhoaneâs senses and he was overcome by homesickness so powerful it felt as though heâd been punched in the gut. As tall as Rhoane, his dark skin was a contrast to the white of his wide smile. Black braids piled on his head to trail behind him and Rhoane half expected to hear little bells chiming from their ends. Not as bulky as Baehlon, but the two couldâve been brothers.
The healer sucked in a breath and bowed low. When he rose, he touched his thumb to his heart, then his forehead, and finally to his lips. âTel raiden besodden carmallae, mi Surtentse.â
âTel railactht nodden hesplenalde.â Rhoane inclined his head to the healer, surprised he knew the Eleri greeting.
âAnd you must be the Darennsai.â His gaze traveled to Taryn. A golden glow came from his brown eyes and his smile grew larger. âRori dreamed of you in her illness. I am honored to make your acquaintance.â
âAs am I, Healer.â Taryn inclined her head with
