Chapter Twenty-Two

I rolled over and tugged the comforter over my face. My eyes squeezed tighter at the pounding in my head, and my entire body ached. The events of last night came rushing back: the dancing, everything Frank said, Maya, Liam kissing me, throwing up in front of Miles, and the reason I felt this way. I was never drinking again.

The last thing I remembered was passing out in the backseat of Brandon’s car. I opened my eyes to the haze of a dark-blue comforter when I felt someone stir next to me. I bolted upright, relaxing when I realized it was just Chloe. The sudden movement sent a sharp throb across my forehead, instantly making me nauseous. Hopefully, my healing would assist my hangover.

Pine and a hint of leather reached my nose, and I realized we must be in Miles’s bed. Heat rushed to my face, even though it was Chloe next to me and not him. It was probably the next safest place for us to go to last night. I looked around the toasted-grey painted bedroom. Not much filled the room besides a chestnut dresser with a TV, one nightstand, and a full laundry basket in the corner.

I heard hushed voices on the other side of the sliding barn door and quietly slid out of the bed, not wanting to wake Chloe. I tiptoed to the door and snuck out, shutting it behind me. Miles was standing at the end of an island, while Agent Foster sat on a barstool at the other end. She stood when she saw me, her tight black curls bouncing with the movement. Her black slacks made her look slim and tall despite wearing flats, and her blazer with a deep purple blouse underneath finished off the “I’m an FBI agent” look.

“This is your . . .” I left my question open as I noted my surroundings, a living room furnished with a grey couch and recliner. A TV hung on the wall behind me next to the barn door, and light shined through the tall windows lining the entire left side of the apartment. The kitchen was straight across from me and had white countertops with dark walnut cabinets and stainless-steel appliances.

“My apartment,” Miles answered. “Do you remember what happened last night?”

“Surprisingly, yes.” I rubbed my eyes as I walked over to them. The light didn’t help my headache, making me want to retreat to the bedroom with its black curtains.

“Drink this and take this.” Miles grabbed a glass of water and a pill that was sitting on the counter before walking around the island and handing them to me. My eyes scanned over his taut white T-shirt and then down to his jeans. My sluggish self took a moment to realize I was checking him out as he stood right in front of me. I cleared my throat and grabbed the pill and glass as my cheeks blushed.

“What is this?” I examined the pill.

“Something that will help you feel better,” he said, suppressing a smirk.
