Chapter 28
âHow are you doin, darlinâ, after that horrible night Simon told me about. Someone drugged you?â Eunie stirred her coffee and gave a sympathetic pat to Saraâs hand. They sat at a table by the window. Few people were eating, choosing instead to nurse cups of coffee while using the caféâs WIFI network.
âIâm fine, really. Itâs just unnerving not to remember anything and to think someone got close enough to do that to us. Makes you think youâre vulnerable, which certainly makes Dagger edgy.â
âRight. No need to make him more edgy than he already is.â Eunie had the same twinkle in her eyes that Simon often displayed. They were like bookends. Same spindly legs, rotund bodies, even their chuckles had the same infectious quality to them. âSimon said you both lost your clothes, too. That must have been, umm, quite something.â She started with a smile, then broke out into her patented laugh.
âWas it ever,â Sara said, more to her tea cup. âI mean it was dark and very hot in the coffin.â
âI bet.â
âFrightening, too. We didnât know if we were buried in the ground or at the bottom of Lake Michigan.â
Eunie listened calmly as Sara explained what little they did know about the hotel, the dinner, and the white limo. âWhat happened to the car you drove to the restaurant?â
âStolen,â Sara replied. âSomeone killed the thief and dumped his body in the trunk.â
âNow I understand why Dagger is eager to fill in the blanks.â
âEverything about that night is puzzling. Skizzy thinks we were kidnapped by aliens who experimented on us.â
Eunie laughed until tears seeped from the corners of her eyes. âIâm sorry if it appears Iâm taking this lightly. Dagger must realize that if it was done by anyone who had meant him harm, he wouldnât be alive.â
âThatâs why he suspects Simon.â
âSimon? Good lord. I donât think Simon could be that creative. He does have an alibi, though. It was our bridge night.â She kept stirring her coffee with the same twinkle in her eyes. âMust make it hard for you and Dagger to keep your distance.â
âNot really. Everything is still businesslike. We have already forgotten about the whole ordeal. Really.â
âUh huh.â Eunie could see the color slowly rising to Saraâs cheeks. âOh, almost forgot.â Eunie rummaged in one of her shopping bags. âI remembered you liked those potted flowers I had. This is the time of year to plant them so I bought you a few packages of hyacinth bulbs. The blue are the most fragrant.â
âThanks, Eunie. How sweet of you.â Sara reached for her purse.
âOn no, sweetheart. This is my gift. You donât owe me anything.â
While Eunie paid the bill at the register, Sara glanced out of the window where a black SUV had pulled up to the curb. A teen dressed in his Sunday best slid out of the front seat, slammed the door, and started for the café. The back window of the SUV rolled down and an older man yelled something at him.
