CHAPTER 10
I had a thought. I turned to Gryffyn. âDo you by any chance have CCTV cameras that record?â If he used the camera to see what was going on outside his tunnel, might not the camera have recorded something on the morning of the murder? It would be to his advantage as well as mine to get this thing solved as soon as possible. He looked back as though heâd never seen the camera before.
âTo tell the truth, Jennifer, I use it like a peephole. And to my way of thinking, a peephole would be just as useful. But Lochlan Balfour was very persuasive, and since the bulk of my fortune is secreted behind these doors, I was inclined to listen. I donât know if youâre acquainted with Lochlan, but I warn you, if you meet him, heâll be selling you things you didnât know you needed.â
I felt for him. I really did, but I was pleased that Lochlan was known here. âI do know him. Heâs very good at what he does.â I felt like I needed a chat with Lochlan. I was just about to say that very thing when my phone rang. I knew it was Lucy. I took her call and put on my most cheerful accent.
âHey, howâs it going? Howâs the honeymoon?â
âItâs very nice,â she said. And I could tell even in those few words that it was. She said, âBut whatâs going on there?â
âNot much,â I said breezily. âWe chose a fabulous cottage right on the high street for the knitting shop, as you know. I canât wait for you to see it. The interior was in pretty rough shape andâ¦â I paused to shoot Gryffyn a glance, knowing he was listening. âAnd so Iâve been cleaning it, and Iâve found a local girl whoâs helping me plan the colors and the layout. Iâll send you some pictures.â
There was a pause on the other end of the line. Then Lucy said, âCut the crap, sister. I know when youâre in trouble. Iâve been feeling you. I waited for you to call me, but you didnât.â
A beat of silence went by. I heard a wave crash on the beach. âLucy, youâre on your honeymoon.â
âYes, I am. And Iâve had five wonderful days. And now my closest sisterâs in trouble. How can I enjoy a honeymoon when Iâm worried about you? So, tell me, whatâs going on?â
I gave up at this point and told her everything that had happened from the moment Iâd taken my fateful morning walk to right now, leaving out only Gryffynâs tunnel of treasure. Did he really not trust Rafe and Lucy? He must have trusted Lochlan because heâd hired the vampire tech mogul to fit the security system. Still, I felt there was a lot about Gryffyn that he kept hidden.
Lucy remained quiet through the whole of my recital, which I appreciated. There were no interjections of Oh my God or You poor thing.
At the end she just asked, âAre you okay?â
And really, that was the only question that mattered between us.
