QUIET HAD FALLEN over Finchley Hall at last. The hour was late, and one by one, the lights upstairs were flickering off. Hugo was still sitting on the bench. He leaned against the hedge with his arms folded, enjoying the peace and quiet.

The cool air soothed his skin—a breeze that no longer held the pleasant warmth of summer. It had a cold touch that whispered up his sleeves and kissed goose bumps across his arms. If he sat out here for too much longer, he knew he would start to shiver.

At last, Sebastian reappeared in the garden, still in his uniform with the addition of a navy wool scarf coiled around his neck. Hugo looked up and smiled.

“Did you have a good night, sir?” Sebastian asked. He wandered past Hugo, though, and disappeared around the back of the hedge walls, out of sight from any wandering eyes, without a word of explanation.

Hugo spun around in his seat, watching Sebastian venture past, and he rose from the bench at once. What on earth was he up to this time?

Hugo rolled his eyes, but unable to help himself, he followed Sebastian like a lost puppy.

“A very good night, thanks to you…and Sam,” he answered quickly, then caught up with Sebastian and followed him around the bushes.

Sebastian stopped suddenly and turned around to face Hugo.

Hugo stopped before him and tilted his head back to look Sebastian in the eyes, his own crinkled with pure happiness. They stood with their chests pressed together.

Sebastian smiled and reached down to ruffle Hugo’s hair. “I’m glad. Though, sir, you must know, Sam is notorious for getting himself into trouble…”

“So am I!”

“Exactly my point.” He sighed, brow wrinkling. “I don’t want you to be bad influences on each other. I mean, I know it’s not my business. I’m just saying—be careful.”

Hugo nodded and took a slight step back from Sebastian, eager to move on the subject. “I do wish we could spend more time together. You’re supposed to be my valet, but Thompson is always finding ways to snatch you up from me.”

Sebastian jeered, snorting in disbelief. “You sound like a jealous lover.”

“I like spending time with you.”

Sebastian frowned a touch. “And I do too, but we have to be careful. You know we could go to jail for this, right?” Despite himself, Sebastian took Hugo’s hands into his own. He lifted them to his mouth and planted a soft kiss to the backs of them.

Hugo nodded. His gaze moved to stare at the floor. “I know.”

Sebastian began to work his thumbs in circles across Hugo’s hands. “Now the summer is over, things will calm down, and you’ll have me all to yourself—at least, until the festive season begins.”

“Hmm, good.” It took a lot not to nuzzle into Sebastian, not to steal a quick kiss from those tempting lips. This was already dangerous enough.

The wind was beginning to pick up by now, and a shiver of it fluttered through the collar of his shirt and hissed down his spine.
