THE DAWN WAS SHROUDED in mist as a gray fog clung to the ground, softening the jagged lines of the airstrip at Salamanca, where the Condor Legion made its base. The hulking shapes of aircraft loomed like specters in the gloom. A group of men stood assembled near one plane, their breath visible in the chilly air. At the forefront stood Heinrich Himmler. His beady eyes swept over the scene, restless and sharp, reflecting his habitual impatience.

Beside him stood Captain Karl Weiss, a seasoned pilot known for his loyalty and skill. Himmler glanced at him. "Captain," he uttered in a low yet commanding tone, "we need to secure the chalice before it's taken by the wrong people."

Weiss met Himmler's gaze and nodded curtly. An opportunity to distinguish himself in the Luftwaffe was not to be disregarded, though he harbored doubts about this mission—a dangerous folly, chasing after legends. But he kept his thoughts to himself.

Nearby, the Junkers Ju 52 stood ready, its three engines idling with a steady growl, the silver-gray of its fuselage shining dully in the muted morning light. Himmler cast an impatient glance at the aircraft. "Best be on your way, Captain," he said. "Time is of the essence. The longer we delay, the greater the chance our enemies will find it first."

Weiss strode toward the waiting plane, his boots crunching on the gravel of the airstrip. The ground crew moved with practiced efficiency, loading the last of the supplies into the hold. The engines hummed, propellers spinning as they warmed up. A fellow officer clapped Weiss on the shoulder—a brief, wordless farewell. As he climbed the steps into the aircraft, a vague unease, which he could not quite name, came over him.

The plane rolled to the runway's end, accelerated, its engines roaring. Rising into the mist, the aircraft vanished from sight as the wheels left the ground. In the cockpit, Weiss settled into his seat, the familiar vibrations of the controls under his hands. The drone of the engines filled the confined space, and the crew busied themselves with their tasks.

As they climbed higher, the fog gave way to thick clouds, and the aircraft shuddered in the grip of turbulent air. Weiss sighed, checking the instruments. The altimeter needle twitched erratically. "Something's off," he murmured.

The copilot glanced at the gauges. "These readings can't be right," he said. "We're getting severe downdrafts."

From behind them, the flight engineer spoke up. "Sir, all systems are showing anomalies. This is very odd. The weather was supposed to be clear."

Outside, the sky darkened, and the wind howled against the fuselage. The plane lurched, dropping several hundred feet. Weiss tightened his grip on the controls. "Stay sharp, everyone," he called out over the roar.

A sudden gust struck the plane with tremendous force, rocking it to one side. Alarms blared, and the cockpit lights flickered. In that moment, a terrible clarity seized Weiss—they were caught in something beyond their control.

"Hold steady!" Weiss shouted, fighting against the yoke as the plane pitched and rolled.

The flight engineer unbuckled his harness.
