Chapter 13
He sighs with resignation. ‘You’re right. You don’t. But that is what I want to change. I can’t keep being that guy in the shadows any longer. I don’t want that anymore.’
I stare at him, not quite believing that this is real. My dreams told me that this would happen, but now that it’s before me my mind is reeling with uncertainty.
Does being with Julian betray my family? Does it trivialise my mum’s death? Is it possible that this is so wrong that it can never be?
‘Elena?’ Julian angles my chin towards him. ‘Please give me a chance. Get to know me, ask me questions, put a spell on me if you have to, but don’t reject all this until you’ve had a chance to know the real me.’
Something he says triggers a thought and I sit upright.
Could it be possible?
‘What is it? What are you thinking?’ he asks, cocking an eyebrow.
Asking him the amount of questions I have floating around in my brain would take days to answer, and I know that we don’t have that amount of time. I need to find out the answers quickly and I have an idea.
My heart beats a little faster. ‘You said I could cast a spell on you? Was that true?’
He cocks his head and moves back slightly. ‘Uh, I want to say yes, but now that your eyes are turning a bright green, I would have to say I’m not so sure now.’
I smile and shuffle forward. ‘I could cast a truth spell that would show me who you are. It would allow me to know the answers to my questions within a few minutes. But I would need your permission first.’
Trepidation and doubt flash across his face. ‘That would mean I would have to reveal…’
‘Everything,’ we say in unison.
His jaw muscle clenches and he moves away from me, standing up and brushing off his pants. He looks out across the parkland as if thinking about what that would mean.
‘It’s the only way, Julian. I can’t trust you if I don’t know you.’
His head swivels to look at me, and again I catch my breath. ‘On one condition.’
‘What would that be?’ I ask dubiously.
His body moves closer to mine and the air around us intensifies. ‘You go out on a date with me. A real date too, not one where we’re dodging ancient creatures or having to battle for our lives.’
A laugh escapes me. He’s got a point. It would be nice to actually go out on a date. I’ve never been on one before. Twenty years old and never been on a date. Sounds like something you’d see on one of those trashy magazines titled “Virgins Really Do Exist”.
Crossing my arms across my chest I say, ‘Fine. So do we have a deal?’ I hold out my hand.
Looking down at my outstretched hand he smiles and then grabs it in a firm shake. ‘Deal.’
‘Good. Then let’s get started.’ I move behind the park bench, making sure Phoebe is still fast asleep before I gesture for Julian to take a seat in front of me.
