The three sat at a round table in the subdued light of the taproom. Aushen and Emrys muttered across the table to each other, Eight sitting between them, listening. Good, he made it back. He said something to Emrys, and Emrys nodded with a light chuckle before his head drooped again.

I chewed my cheek as I crept over to them, my shoulders curling inward. The dreary light matched their expressions. Aushen and Emrys, drained and gloomy. Emrys melted on the table, his eyelids heavy, stress pushing down on him.

They all looked at me. Eight’s eyes glowed with ire.

“Nice of you to join us,” Emrys muttered. “How was your day in the upper tiers?” He pinned me with an accusatory look. Impulsive, he called me. Those eyes knew—they called me what I was. Hypocrite.

I slid into a hard chair. The noise climbed as the place filled. Eight lifted a brow. What did I have to say for myself? They all waited.

I didn’t bother to apologize. I did what I had to. Instead, I explained my plan to them. Clear and concise. I would go to the party tomorrow, alone, and speak with Kier—if he showed up. If he didn’t, we’d waste two days. I didn’t lie. I didn’t leave anything out. Other than Nikos Historia. Only his name. And his affiliation to Heir. Eight would’ve blown it out of proportion otherwise. So, I suppose I did lie in the end…

He listened to what I had to say, waiting for me to finish. But then the silence continued. I waited for a voice of venom. A denial. A rejection. An argument. But he said nothing.

It wasn’t an approval or a rejection. I should’ve left it at that. Should’ve. “What do you think?” We watched him, and I held my breath, readying my argument. This is our only option. Don’t let your paranoia disrupt the mission.

He shrugged, face easing into disinterest. “You can do what you want, Olivia.” He leaned back, balancing on the chair’s back legs. “And I’ll do what I want.”

“I—”

“Take Emrys with you,” Aushen suggested. Eight side-eyed her, not hiding his annoyance. Emrys’s shoulders rose as he pushed himself closer to the tabletop. Hiding. “At least you won’t be alone, and he won’t be recognized. I was glad to have him with me today.” She wanted us to reconcile. We looked at each other, both wanting to say no.

My gaze slipped to Eight’s. With nothing more to say to me, he got up and left.
