CHAPTER 10

The next morning I was sitting in the beige hallway outside Sommes Casting, waiting for my turn to be seen. I was wearing a white shirt and black pants, standard waitress wear. I’d put my hair up in an attractive French twist and stuck a pencil behind my ear for effect. Even though they didn’t expect you to dress the part, it was supposed to give you that edge. Except that five of the women sitting outside with me and the two that had already come out had dressed like waitresses too. I glanced around at my competition. World-weary? As usual, Peggy didn’t know what she was talking about. They were all as fresh and sweet-looking as just-baked donuts. Except for the one sitting across from me. She had the hard look of a seasoned waitress. She even had on a pink uniform, complete with a white apron, a cap and badge that said MADGE. She was cracking her gum and reading a magazine, but must have sensed me staring, because she shot me a mind-your-own-business look. I returned a sour smile and checked my watch.

Two o’clock. At this rate, I’d be here the rest of the day. Especially if they asked me to stick around. Not that it mattered. After Jan found out what Ryan and I had done last night, I was sure she’d be FedExing the rest of my stuff back to New York anyway. It all started when Ryan showed up, furious because the clinic she worked at had received a bomb threat. It was taken for granted that the Guardian Angels were behind it since they’d been threatening reprisals ever since it was announced that Dr. Haine, the Dr. Hyde of obstetricians, would be practicing at their new clinic. That, in addition to my telling her Jan’s garage had been turned into Guardian Angel Central earlier in the day, caused her to take the ferry straight over from work.

I was upstairs packing and had my earphones on, so I hadn’t heard them arguing until Jan came up the stairs with Ryan following behind her, yelling, “You are actually going to let that fat-assed fanatic deliver your baby? Are you insane?”

I’d taken off my earphones and had stepped into the hallway just as Jan whirled around at the top of the steps to shout down, “Apparently so, since both my sister and husband are trying to have me put away!”

She pivoted and went into her room and slammed the door behind herself, which Ryan flung back open with equal force. She was still wearing her nurse’s whites from work, but this was no Florence Nightingale. I had no doubt that when she told patients to pull their pants down and bend over, not too many disobeyed.

“Guess what? If I could I’d call the rubber wagon tonight! Tell me,” she said, crossing her arms, leaning into one hip. “Does Kevin know about this? Because you know it’s going to be over his dead body that Gail delivers his baby.
