Part 2
Miss O’Neil had not been gone from us long when Holmes had dashed out. He returned a few hours later and did not inform me of where he had been or of his actions. He simply picked up his violin and began playing; so I pressed the matter. “Where have you been?” I asked.
“To make enquiries, my dear Watson. Action must be taken now if we want results by Friday for Miss O’Neil. I sent out a message to my ‘Baker Street Irregulars’ as you call them” - his group of street urchins who were his eyes and ears where he could not be. “I need their assistance for this,” he finished and began playing a tune I had not heard before. It was like him to create new music when a new case was upon him; as if he was creating his very own theme to accompany the case. Sometimes it was as if he was working on a stage production and was creating the accommodating pieces to go with each scene, building towards the crescendo.
We heard a bang on the door and in came two Irregulars. Normally the entire gang would flood our room causing Mrs Hudson to fall into shambles because of the disorder they would cause but I assume Holmes made it clear only two should come. “Ah Hopkins and Jennifer, so good to see you both,” said Holmes offering them a place to sit. Holmes was standing in the window still working on his new piece of music when the two had entered, but after a few more plucks on the strings he put down his violin and sat with his irregulars offering them tea and biscuits.
‘“Ello Mis’er ‘Olmes, how are ya?” asked Hopkins taking the cut of tea Holmes was offering him.
“I’m doing very well thank you,”
“How are you Jennifer?” Holmes asked.
“I’ve been bet’r but no real complaints,” she said dipping a biscuit into her tea.
“I need you two on a job, It will pay you two shillings a day if you do it properly,” stated Holmes and the two perked in their seats.
“Yes, sir! Wha’dya needs from us?” asked Hopkins.
“This cab,” said Holmes pulling out a piece of paper with a cab number on it and the name of Cecil Moore. “I want you to follow him for a few days. Tell me his patterns, who he speaks to and how often. Tell me where he goes and if he has any issues with passengers.” The two nodded at Holmes and kept nibbling at the tea and biscuits. “I want at least one of you on him at all times. Use the others as well to keep tabs in case you lose him but I strongly recommend one of you are in sight of him at all times. Come to me Thursday night and tell me everything you have seen.”
“V’ry well!” they said and the two left Baker Street in search of Cecil Moore.
The days passed and we received a letter from Miss O’Neil asking if we had made any head way.
