DESCRIPTION French television star Alex Goude, who fronted the ill-fated Twisted Vegas variety show at Westgate, stepped into the director’s chair to help fellow countryman Xavier Mortimer adapt his magical miming for an American audience. Unique among Vegas illusionists, Magical Dream doesn’t simply present a series of tricks but also weaves impressive effects into a simple but effective story line about Mortimer’s hapless pursuit of a “fantasy girl,” played by baby-voiced Lauren Metter, a practiced prestidigitator herself. We follow Mortimer’s romantic quest through a fast-paced series of scenarios that effortlessly integrate magical illusions with dance, physical comedy, and ingenious interactive videos that give new meaning to the phrase “magic mirror.”

The dreamlike result is closer to Charlie Chaplin meets Cirque du Soleil (which Mortimer performed with) than David Copperfield, which is not to dis his sleight-of-hand skills; Mortimer makes classic mind reading and “Metamorphosis” gags feel fresh again, and his levitation finale—performed while jumping rope in front of a full-length mirror—will make you wonder for weeks afterward. Between Mortimer’s adorably impenetrable accent and his extremely European sense of absurdity, Magical Dream may be a bit too “artsy-fartsy” for folks who just want their magicians to make stuff disappear. But if you’re on his wavelength, Mortimer will make you believe there’s still room left for innovation in the art of illusion.

CONSUMER TIPS Sin City Theater’s cabaret setup could be charitably described as cozy, or more honestly as sardine-like. Sight lines from the unelevated general-admission seats are hit-or-miss, but you must upgrade to VIP to get a cocktail table up front (where most of the audience volunteers are picked from), even if some are empty.
