5. LISTEN SILENTLY

What gives empathy its power is the silence that follows, so silent listening gets its own little section here. As we advocated a few pages ago, avoid contaminating a wonderfully empathic statement with a preemptive solution or judgment. Instead, express empathy and then fall silent. Full stop. No more. Just say what you think your kid is feeling, then be quiet and listen. Let your child absorb your empathic statement. Accurate or not, your attempt sends a strong message that you care. Then, let your child respond, no matter how long it takes. Usually, your child will reciprocate your warmth. Even if they sound annoyed, their response acknowledges your attempt. You are lowering the drawbridge.
