“What do you think of Wayne Rawlings, Lou?”

“I think he’s the sanest one we’ve talked to, so he must be the murderer.”

“I don’t know, Lou. I think the old lady who lives next door to Clyde Amburgey seems pretty sane.”

“She probably has Clyde’s body buried in her basement.”

“I don’t think those houses have basements.”

“Maybe she buried it in the backyard then. Under the rosebushes.”

“We’ll go back around midnight and check. I’ll let you dig. Just watch out for those thorns. But just in case, let’s check out some guys who’ve been getting some free weekends out of Arthur Honeycutt.”

There were only two more guys to check out. We had already talked to Archie Honeycutt and Chris Matthews, who had seen cars everywhere. I was most interested in Josh Logan, who, according to Matthews, loved the ladies and hadn’t been seen lately. With so many guys disappearing, I wondered if I should have Lou check those woods for more bodies. I knew Frank would like some extra work.

Josh Logan lived in a small house on the grounds of his parents’ estate. I made a note that we could bypass the main house and get to Josh’s place without anyone in the main house seeing us. There was no main gate and no security either. Josh could come and go without being seen. And come and go he had done. No one was at the house when Lou and I arrived. There were lights on, but I was sure that was for security purposes, and they probably came on and went off at certain times of the day with the help of a timer. The house wasn’t large and had lots of sliding glass doors and windows, so it was obvious to me that no one was home. There was also a pool nearby that wasn’t being used and contained no dead bodies, floating or submerged. I decided to stop at the main house on the way out to see when the last time was that Josh’s parents had seen him. I knocked and the door was answered by someone who was paid to do just that and probably had other duties as well. I introduced myself and the sergeant and we were ushered inside.

“What can I do for you, Lieutenant?” said a man I assumed was Mr. Logan. He was followed into the room by a woman I was sure was his wife.

“We’re wondering when the last time was that you saw your son Josh.”

“See, Randolph, I told you something has happened to Josh. You said he’s just gone away on another of his fanciful journeys.”

“He’s irresponsible, Marie. Who knows with that boy? He needs a job. I’ve offered him one. He’s allergic to work.”

They suddenly remembered that Lou and I were there and turned back to us. Mrs. Logan answered.

“It’s been over two weeks, Lieutenant. He went to that house that Arthur Honeycutt owns in the country. He went with some of his friends, and he hasn’t been home since.”

“You don’t know that, Marie.
