âWhat do you think of Wayne Rawlings, Lou?â
âI think heâs the sanest one weâve talked to, so he must be the murderer.â
âI donât know, Lou. I think the old lady who lives next door to Clyde Amburgey seems pretty sane.â
âShe probably has Clydeâs body buried in her basement.â
âI donât think those houses have basements.â
âMaybe she buried it in the backyard then. Under the rosebushes.â
âWeâll go back around midnight and check. Iâll let you dig. Just watch out for those thorns. But just in case, letâs check out some guys whoâve been getting some free weekends out of Arthur Honeycutt.â

There were only two more guys to check out. We had already talked to Archie Honeycutt and Chris Matthews, who had seen cars everywhere. I was most interested in Josh Logan, who, according to Matthews, loved the ladies and hadnât been seen lately. With so many guys disappearing, I wondered if I should have Lou check those woods for more bodies. I knew Frank would like some extra work.
Josh Logan lived in a small house on the grounds of his parentsâ estate. I made a note that we could bypass the main house and get to Joshâs place without anyone in the main house seeing us. There was no main gate and no security either. Josh could come and go without being seen. And come and go he had done. No one was at the house when Lou and I arrived. There were lights on, but I was sure that was for security purposes, and they probably came on and went off at certain times of the day with the help of a timer. The house wasnât large and had lots of sliding glass doors and windows, so it was obvious to me that no one was home. There was also a pool nearby that wasnât being used and contained no dead bodies, floating or submerged. I decided to stop at the main house on the way out to see when the last time was that Joshâs parents had seen him. I knocked and the door was answered by someone who was paid to do just that and probably had other duties as well. I introduced myself and the sergeant and we were ushered inside.
âWhat can I do for you, Lieutenant?â said a man I assumed was Mr. Logan. He was followed into the room by a woman I was sure was his wife.
âWeâre wondering when the last time was that you saw your son Josh.â
âSee, Randolph, I told you something has happened to Josh. You said heâs just gone away on another of his fanciful journeys.â
âHeâs irresponsible, Marie. Who knows with that boy? He needs a job. Iâve offered him one. Heâs allergic to work.â
They suddenly remembered that Lou and I were there and turned back to us. Mrs. Logan answered.
âItâs been over two weeks, Lieutenant. He went to that house that Arthur Honeycutt owns in the country. He went with some of his friends, and he hasnât been home since.â
âYou donât know that, Marie.
