Still waiting in the park on the bench, I continued down my list of calls. Since I had to concentrate on the Stuyvesant case, I had to let my other active clients know I couldnât work their jobs. My income would take a serious hit, but it was the ethical thing to do. If I had to spend time in courtâor in the big houseâI wanted to make sure I didnât leave any of my current clients hanging over the fire.
Iâd finished two of the three calls, when I glanced up and saw Gary leaning against a tree watching me. Relieved, I put away my phone and waved him over. He hopped up on the bench beside me.
I turned to talk. For the benefit of anyone who might stroll by, I pretended like I was engaged in the solitary contemplation of nature.
âHow was your time in the slammer, big guy?â
That was not the first topic I wanted to deal with, but it told me that Garyâor somebodyâwas keeping an eye on me. The way my luck had been breaking lately, the snooping was actually reassuring.
I ignored his question and got right to my business. âI know you guys are watching Stuyvesant. Can you tell me if he had his wife sign any papers latelyâmaybe the last couple of months?â
The gnome nodded. âYeah, probably. What Teddy didnât see, Ethel will have.â He thought for a moment. âAnything special youâre looking for?â
âOne thing Stuyvesant might have done is trick Samantha into signing off on a transfer of the deed to the property that Mel . . . you know, is interested in. I need to know if she signed any papers for him. Iâve also asked a friend to find out what the deed looks like so if needs be you or somebody could take it . . . or something.â I waved a hand uncertainly. âMaybe if the deed disappears, so does Melâs problem.â There was undoubtedly an official record of the property, but a missing deed might complicate or delay the land grab.
âSounds easy enough.â
Unfortunately talking about the deed gave me an additional complicating thought. âAnother way he could have played it would be to have her change her willâassuming she has one.â
I thought how that might be done. âIf she did have a will, did she have it registered?â
âYouâre talking lawyer stuff, and thatâs over my head.â
âDo you guys have lawyers?â
He smiled broadly. âSure. We got lawyers, or at least what passes for lawyers. You think maybe they could play a part in this on our end?â
It was a new thoughtâone that might be worth exploring.
âCould be. Iâm fishing for information, so anything you can tell me would help. Meanwhile, Iâll have somebody check to see if Samantha has a registered will, and if so, when it was registered.â
âIs Jessica the one whoâs doing all this for you?â He grinned. âYouâre going to work that poor girl to death.â
Was I surprised the gnome knew about Jessica and the work
