CHAPTER 21

TRUCE

Thaní was frustrated. Alexandrákis had taken a hell of a long time to come back with the enlargements and he was itching to be part of the interrogation of Kristīne. In the end, he lost patience and left a message saying he would come back later. When he made it to Síva’s only hotel, it was already eleven twenty. The receptionist showed him to a room at the back. Thaní opened the door and found Leo with his feet on the table. At the far end, Dimítris was looking out of the window. The room was filled with cigarette smoke.

“You’ve missed all the fun,” said Leo.

“Already? What’s the story?”

“Kristīne says Spíros and Sam had an affair, but she didn’t know about it at the time.”

“Very convenient; seems like she was the only person who didn’t know then, from what Nick Fisher was telling me.”

“Really? Still, I don’t think she was lying to us. She only found out because Spíros seemed unnaturally upset after hearing the news of Sam’s death and she put two and two together. When he finally confessed, he got his marching orders.”

“And he was allowed to leave with his balls intact?”

“So it seems. She says it wasn’t the first time he’d been unfaithful. Far from it. But this was the last straw. She just washed her hands of him, there and then. No big deal, by the sound of it.”

“And does she know where he is now?”

“No. He told her he was taking the ferry to Palaióchora, but she hasn’t heard from him since. I told her we didn’t find him there and she wasn’t surprised. Said he could be travelling again or maybe he’d gone back to Athína.”

“Does she have an alibi for the night of the murder?”

“She was playing cards with a couple from a nearby tent until after midnight and then she went to bed. Spíros was working at the beach bar until after two. She was fast asleep by then. She didn’t hear him come in.”

“Hmmm. Maybe. But where was Spíros after the beach bar closed? Did he go straight back to the tent or not? Also, either one could have sneaked out, later in the night.”

“It’s possible, sure. But what motive did Spíros have for killing Sam? He was onto a good thing with her.”

“Maybe he wanted a repeat performance and she rejected him? He has to be a suspect. After all, he seems to have done a runner.”

“Yes, but there could be other reasons for that. We know he’s had money problems and a history of drug abuse. I think he was the supplier at Moondance.”

“And you think he fell out with his suppliers?”

“It happens – and they’re ruthless bastards, those guys.”

“Hmmm. Going back to Sam, have we checked out this other couple?”

Dimítris responded.

“I found them, Sergeant. They’re still here – and they back up her story.”

Thaní turned back to Leo:

“So, you let Kristīne go, boss?”

“I did. But she’s not going anywhere. Her jewellery business is here.”

“We need to find this Spíros.
