Flash blindness is something that overloads and burns the retinas inside a person’s eyes. It can happen for all kinds of reasons. If it’s from someone taking a selfie with a camera flash at night, the blindness goes away in a second or two. If it’s caused by something like witnessing a nuclear explosion, it can be permanent.

After the blinding burst of light, my blindness wouldn’t fade, so I could only listen to what was happening over at the dock—and it didn’t sound good.

Necros was shouting at her hench-people, her voice more ragged than I’d ever heard it.

“This is impossible! SubSonique, help Shadow Paladin up! Where is Dr. Chrysler?”

“He’s unconscious,” Cryoborg’s voice rang out, “and you’re hurt.”

“Never mind that!” Necros raged. “I will recover. But my child . . .”

“Mistress,” Shadow Paladin called out, “We have to flee! The girl’s training beacon was activated during the melee. MASC is undoubtedly already on the way.”

Then I felt a hand on my elbow and instinctively flinched.

“Are you okay? Can you get up?”

It was Connie’s voice, somewhere in front of me.

“I can’t see,” I admitted.

A moment later, I felt Connie’s fingers touch my eyelids and a coolness flowed from them.

“Logan, I can’t . . . I’m sorry. I have to get down there!”

I heard Connie hesitate for another moment and then take off running.

Blinking away the blurriness, I could see now what was left of the dock: a disaster scene of blackened, ash-covered wood and concrete. There was movement at the edges, where Cryoborg and SubSonique were lifting up Dr. Chrysler. Shadow Paladin lurked near the shade of the steamboat; and Margie was slowly pulling herself back up out of the river, steam rising off her metallic skin. And there, at the center, barely up on one knee was Necros, her arms and chest scorched and smoking. A few feet from her, there were two forms lying on the ground nearby—Elena and Stonefist.

I refocused my eyes just in time to see Connie dropping from the roof to a dumpster and then to the ground, her black combat boots pounding with each step as she sprinted out onto the smoldering dock.

All at once, her approach caught the attention of Necros.

“Take her!” Necros ordered, her tone suddenly more certain as she rose to her feet. “Everyone back to the craft!”

“Wait!”

That was all Connie got out before Shadow Paladin wrapped her in his cape and pulled her into the nearest shadow, vanishing instantly. Necros retreated into the steamboat, staggering as she went with SubSonique guarding her back, followed by Cryoborg, who was carrying the limp form of Dr. Chrysler.

Even though Gil had told me to stay, I knew I couldn’t just let them get away with Connie. I ran across the roof and peered over the edge, trying to judge whether I could take the same route down that Connie had.

I was about to throw my legs over the edge when Gil materialized behind me, grabbing the collar of my shirt and pulling me back from the edge.
