“Now what?” Gil asked Margie as he flashed up and down the various hallways.

“We have to get out of here!” Margie said, stating the obvious.

That’s when I found myself playing the role of tour guide.

“Down here,” I told them, motioning to an empty hallway that led deeper into the base.

To their credit, Gil and Margie didn’t argue. They just followed my directions past the gym, through a set of doors, past the labs filled with glowing tubes and massive computers, as the hallways behind us filled with soldiers. Before long, we’d made our way to a row of escape pods.

“I forgot these were even here,” Margie admitted. “Let’s go!”

Gil protested. “We can get Logan to safety, but then we have to come back.”

I’ve seen a lot of foster parents argue with each other over the years, and I’m pretty used to being the cause of it all. But this was different. This time there was no time. So while they bickered, I slipped into the nearest escape pod, slid the door closed, and hit the launch button.

The pod shot up for a few seconds, then ejected me, and I tumbled out of a dumpster, landing roughly in an abandoned alley just off Hollywood Boulevard. I’ve been thrown into dumpsters before, but never out of one.

I was a bit unsteady. I’m not a fan of thrill rides, and it felt like I’d just come off the world’s least-fun roller coaster. Dawn was breaking as I made my way out to the main street and peeked around the corner. Smoke rose into the air from a few blocks away, in the general direction of Monolith Studios. The ground was still thrumming with tremors. The people out at that hour were all running for safety as another massive shock wave crumbled the last standing studio buildings in the distance.

After a beat, I saw someone . . . or multiple someones . . . flying up from the dust cloud and into the rising sun on a hoverboard. It was hard to make out details with the haze and sun, but I could tell Seismyxer had gotten away and had maybe taken a person with him.

“Logan!”

That was Gil and Margie. Margie’s eyebrows were almost touching each other and she was doing the thing where you whisper really loudly, which I’ve been told can mean a person is angry.

“Get back over here!” Margie barked.

“Why did you take off?” Gil asked. “We hadn’t decided what we were going to do yet!”

But I had decided what I was going to do, so I said, “I know, but I had decided what I was going to do. I’m going back to ESTO. I can’t stay with you guys; they’ll never let me.”

“Of course you can! We’ll just . . .” Margie tried to protest, but it was Gil who understood.

“He’s right, Margie. MASC won’t allow it . . . and they think we’ve . . . you know . . . gone rogue, especially now. And Seismyxer keeps turning up when we’re trying to have .
