Chapter 28

Tyson

“Have you ever heard of the Kid Lit Quiz?” Tyson asked Ava that evening after dinner. They were watching YouTube on the TV in the family room.

“The trivia thing? Yeah, we have a team at school.” Ava looked over at Tyson. “Why?”

“Just wondering.”

Ava scrolled through her phone. “My teacher asks us questions from the website sometimes. You want to try some?” She didn’t wait for his answer. “‘What type of dress did Angelina Ballerina wear?’”

Tyson rolled his eyes. “Is that actually a question?”

Ava laughed and nodded. She’d been obsessed with Angelina Ballerina, a mouse who loved ballet, when she was little. Tyson had had to sit through more episodes than he could count. “A tutu,” he said

“Next one. ‘What is the only thing the BFG eats?’”

It was like the questions were rigged. His third-grade teacher had read them Roald Dahl’s The BFG. “Snozzcumbers!”

“Right!” Tyson answered two more questions correctly, but got stuck on “What book by Charles Dickens was famous for its portrayal of criminals and their nasty lives?” The answer was Oliver Twist, but Tyson had never heard of the author or the book.

“You’re good at these,” Ava said. “You should join the team.”

The note Jane had left today suggested the same thing. “Me?”

“Why not?”

He fixed her with a look. His own mother was still in shock that he was reading. What would Andrew say? Or Affan? Tyson was the last person they’d expect to join the Kid Lit Quiz team. “You know why.”

She rolled her eyes. “Who cares what people think?”

“The team wouldn’t want me.”

“How do you know unless you ask? If you get the next question right, you have to go to the next practice. Deal?”

Tyson nodded, reluctantly.

“What stuffing was used inside the little boy’s beloved Velveteen Rabbit?”

It was a story his mom had read to them many times when he was little. He looked at Ava and considered saying the wrong answer to end the discussion.

But he thought of that poor rabbit and how desperately he wanted to turn into something else. There was a slight catch in his throat when he gave the correct answer. “Sawdust.”
