She followed me to my room and fixed us a couple of drinks while I showered. I stood under the powerful stream of hot water and tried to think. One thing was clear above all others. I needed to talk to the brigadier and he needed to know what was going on here. While I was toweling myself dry she sat on the bed watching me, and finally said, “You must stop your angry behavior. Or the master will kill you. He has killed many men.”

I dropped the towel on the bathroom floor and pulled on my jeans. I considered her a moment before doing up my belt.

“This is not what I was looking for, Anna. Is this what you want?”

“It’s what the Master wants. This is the Church of Nergal. He is the god of war.”

“Yeah, I know, but the idea is, after you’ve had a life of war and killing, you then find peace…”

She was shaking her head and I trailed off.

“Death and war never stop, Harry. It is the cycle, round and round. Some men are born to kill, like you, like the Master.”

“Yeah?” I grabbed my shirt and pulled it on. “I didn’t see him do much killing today. It seems to me he had other people do it for him.”

She shrugged. “He is the Master.”

“Yeah, right. I need to talk to him in private. Can you arrange that?”

“Maybe.”

“Good. Do it. Also,” I paused, thinking fast, my mind racing, “I need to go to Hermosillo. Can you arrange a car?”

She shook her head, frowning. “You cannot go to Hermosillo.”

“What do you mean, I can’t go to Hermosillo?”

“It is not permitted.”

I sighed, finding it ever harder to suppress my anger. “OK, fine. What about vehicles? Where are they kept?”

Her frown turned from concern to distress. “Why? What do you intend to do? You are out of control, Harry. You must stop.”

I forced a laugh. “Relax, will you. I don’t plan to do anything. I’m going to meet up with Abbas, ask him for permission to drive over to Hermosillo, borrow a car and drive there and back. No big deal.”

“Harry,” she stepped up close and grabbed the open collar of my shirt, “Harry, he will not let you go. Please don’t do anything crazy. You know I will have to pay if you do—even if you just ask—because I brought you here. Nobody is allowed to leave, in case…”

She trailed off.

“In case what?”

She hesitated. “He does not want anyone to know where we are. That is why your cell phone was removed. We must not make contact with anyone until the Master says it is OK.”

“Anna, will you relax? I am not going to do anything crazy, I am not going to contact anyone or tell them where we are, and I sure as hell am not going to put you at risk. I just want to know where the vehicles are kept. I’ll borrow it and no one will even know I’ve gone. Will you tell
