If you decide itâs time to change careers, then youâll need to come up with a plan. Start by focusing on what you enjoy doing the most. Why do you like it? What elements give you satisfaction? Then consider if you will need more education or certification. But before you enroll in an expensive program, do your research to determine whether that degree is actually necessary. If it is, can you pursue it after joining a company that contributes to its employeesâ education? Is there other training that will position you to get into a new field? Find a mentor who can advise you on what you need.
You may, however, already possess the skills for a different career.
At a glance, Koma Gandy was on a trailblazing career path. A midshipman in Naval ROTC at Harvard University, her first job was as a US Navy officer. She was among the first group of women assigned to combat ships. After four years of active duty, she went into the Navy Reserve but was recalled to active duty and deployed to the Gulf at the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003.
She then pursued her MBA and pivoted into financial services as an asset manager in New York City, teaching herself on the go about investment management, hedge funds, and financial operations. After a stint at Morgan Stanley, in 2019 she shifted again, this time into technology, and joined Codecademy, an online interactive site that offers free coding classes, as its vice president and head of curriculum.
âI have always applied the lessons of leadership and management I learned very early in my career to be successful in different industries, and consistently sought out opportunities to solve problems that make an impact,â she said in an interview with InHerSight. âThereâs no âoneâ perfect pathâas long as youâre learning all the time, finding new opportunities to grow, and working in places where you can meaningfully contribute to an organization (and be recognized for your impact), thatâs a good thing.â9
Apply the lessons learned in chapter two on networking, and you will have a safety net when you decide if and when itâs time to make a career leap. And above all else, remember my direction outlined in chapter one: know yourself.
As Michelle Obama has perceptively noted: âSometimes the heart knows before the head.â
