Paul cursed time as he sped through the almost deserted streets of Orlando toward the T. D. Waterhouse Center. He parked his car and sprinted toward the building. Why was he in a hurry to meet her?
He knew why. When he’d left her on Saturday he’d had a hope that had been dead a long time. The hope that spring might now be a part of his life instead of the long winter that he’d existed in. Today when she’d called, he realized that she was still interested in him. That she’d made a choice. It was his turn to step up to the plate.
But old habits died hard and when Tom had called a last-minute dinner meeting, Paul couldn’t say no. Angelica had left his ticket with Corrine and Corrine had given him a harsh look that said she didn’t approve of his actions. He’d ignored her.
Corrine did like the promotions they both kept getting. And dinner meetings made the difference between promotion and stagnation. The client, Pete Macneilly, was one of the first Tarron had worked with. A huge metals manufacturer who had helped put Tarron on the map when Tom had first opened his doors in the late 1950s. Paul could have begged off, but Tom was grooming him to take over and Macneilly was more than a strategic account. It was a very important partnership.
Walking out early wasn’t an option. According to the radio station he’d listened to, they were in the second half of the game. If he was lucky, he’d get to his seat before it ended.
Damn. Of all the nights for her to have called. Maybe he should have made the opening gesture in this relationship they were developing, but with his trip to London his focus had to be on the office situation.
Angelica knew what his life was like. That didn’t stop the guilt. His sister, Layne, hated it when her husband, a fisherman off the shores of Gloucester in Maine, was out late. The demands of the job didn’t matter to her, she always wanted her man home with her at night. He couldn’t imagine that Angelica would feel differently.
Though he wasn’t yet her man. He wanted to be. And maybe that was why he was so concerned about being late. If any other woman waited for him at the game, he’d have canceled the date earlier tonight. He wouldn’t have even tried to make everything happen in one night.
But it wasn’t another woman. It was Angelica and she brought out parts of him that he didn’t even realize he had. The meeting had run late. Later than he’d expected. He’d made no bones about the fact that his career came first.
Did he sound defensive?
He left his jacket in the car and loped toward the arena. He bought two beers from the vendor and headed toward the lower bowl. The place was packed. Paul wasn’t surprised. After all, Shaq and the Lakers versus Orlando was a game every Magic fan wanted to see…and win.
