LUCKY
I only rapped the metal knocker on Dometâs front door at Naomiâs insistence. I had been here enough times to expect him to either be passed out on the floor, surrounded by empty bottles, or not hear my attempt at being polite.
Imagine my face when the door opened and a servant stood at the entrance. âHeir Kingman, can I take your jacket? May I take your name, madam? Master Domet only advised me that Heir Michael would be bringing a guest. No name was accompanied with it.â
âExcuse me?â I said, flabbergasted. This had to be a joke of Dometâs. âFormalâ and âfancyâ and âproperâ werenât words I would have used to describe anything about him in the past.
âMy name is Naomi Dexter,â Naomi said as she handed the servant her jacket. Then she nudged me in the side and urged me to do the same.
Once the butler had both our jackets, he invited us into the house properly. âIf you two would follow me, Master Domet is waiting in the dining room.â
Naomi and the butler spent the length of the walk discussing what was for lunchâa bunch of fancy things that usually didnât taste as good as cheaper things soaked in butter and garlicâwhile I took in the changes to Dometâs house since the last time I had been here.
It was still immaculate, but in a much more orderly way. There was no sense of lingering dust on the tops of paintings and behind pieces of furniture that hadnât been moved in, well, generations. Everything was still colored azure and pink, and I made a mental note to determine why at a future date. Domet wasnât someone to do something without reason. For all I knew, it could be a clue about his past before becoming an Immortal.
As we entered the dining room Domet was in the middle of a conversation⦠with Serena and Chloe. I must have looked a mess for Domet to smile quite as widely as he did. Serena, in a dress very similar to the one she had worn the last time we met, wasnât pleased. Neither was Chloe. She was wearing her Ravenâs armor. Not even dinner with Domet was a good enough reason to wear something else.
Domet rose from his seat, arms open wide, and then said, âMichael, such a pleasure to see you again. I am glad to see you are doing better, Connoisseur Dexter. You gave us all a fright when Prince Adreann shot you.â
Naomi opened her mouth to respond but was cut off by Serena stabbing a knife into the table. She wasnât even attempting to hide her displeasure. âDomet, what is the meaning of this? You invite me to lunch knowing full well he was attending, too? I should have you hauled up for treason.â
âFrankly, my dear, you couldnât even if you wanted to,â Domet stated as he looked down at her. âHollow is in debt to me. Wars arenât cheap. Do you really want to threaten the man who
