A lot of historical research went into the design of the Quileute village.

Tish Monaghan had to design costumes faithful to what the Quileutes of the time might have worn. It led, she said, to “the most interesting bit of research,” including poring over online sources for diary accounts, logs, and descriptions from explorers and seamen who encountered the tribes of the Pacific Northwest coastline. She researched books in brick-and-mortar libraries, referred to Edward Curtis’s period photographs, and looked at the works of period painters. But a breakthrough came during several museum visits to Simon Fraser University and its Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, and to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. “From northern British Columbia to southern Washington, and even into Oregon, there was a similarity to the clothing—cedar bark,” Monaghan explained. “Both museums had original artifacts from the seventeen hundreds and burial sites, with examples of the cedar work clothing. Although they were in disrepair, I was able to study them up close, and [the museum] allowed me to take photographs.
