NORTHERN BIRDS

The main difference between northern birds and southern birds is the places you have to hunt. Generally the vast majority of turkeys harvested in the North are harvested on public lands, whereas in the South and the West, most turkeys will be taken on private lands. Because of the North's large populations, not as many large, private landowners are in the area as in the South. Because large northern landowners often have their lands leased to hunting clubs, most northern hunters hunt public game lands and national forests.

In the South and Midwest, the land is mostly agricultural with large timber companies, large private landowners and ranchers who own and lease the land, which usually contains more private hunting than public hunting. The big ranches in the West also will be privately held and only can be hunted by permission or by buying a lease.

By knowing that northern turkeys primarily will be found on public hunting lands, the tactics to hunt them will be somewhat different than the techniques of southern and western hunters. When you hunt public lands and a turkey gobbles, you must get close to him and call him to you quickly before another hunter hears him gobble and goes to him. When hunting on public lands in the northern United States, you must outcompete the other hunters to bag the birds. However, if you do not take a tom in the first two hours after daylight, your chances of bagging a northern bird drastically increase after 9:30 A.M.

Turkey hunters often are two hour hunters, whether you find them in the North, South or West. The highest concentration of hunters usually occurs for a hour before daylight to two hours after daybreak, and the birds soon adapt to this hunting pressure. If you are hunting turkeys in the North on public lands, your hunting from 9:00 A.M. until noon in states that only permit half-day hunting or hunting all day long in the states that permit all-day hunting will be productive times.

Although the eastern wild turkeys of the North do not exhibit any different traits than the easterns living in the South, the hunting pressure, the terrain and the method of hunting are different.
