Withdrawal symptoms can begin as early as six to eight hours after the user's last fix. Many addicts report that they have experienced the worst effects from two to three days into their withdrawal, with major discomfort receding by the fourth and fifth days. However, many physical effects of withdrawal can last for weeks or months, depending on the person. The psychological effects of withdrawal (like cravings for the drug) can last for years or even an entire lifetime.

Among the most common physical withdrawal symptoms are aches and pains. Many addicts describe these as similar to the kind accompanying the flu, but more intense. Because the brain of the heroin addict is no longer producing endorphins correctly and the false euphoria supplied by heroin is now absent, the body of the addict experiencing withdrawal can't cope with the pain.
