It turns out John Tyler was not just dead but murdered. It didn’t take long for Roscoe’s team to determine the fallen Romeo had suffered from a blunt blow to the head, courtesy of Mackey’s exterior brick wall.

It also didn’t take long for them to determine there was no shortage of suspects in his death. Mikenna Wells topped the list thanks to Glory prompting Mikenna to denounce John Tyler and say, for all at Cowboy Coffee to hear, that he was dead to her.

Some good citizen had reported that, which meant Sergeant Starr had no choice but to ask questions. The phone call the hour before had been a courtesy and had given me enough time to race from my mother’s house back to the square. Luck was on my side. A parking spot opened up in front to T&T, the local watering hole, which was across the street and half a block down from Cowboy Coffee. I threw my Jeep into park and jumped out. Forty seconds later, I burst through into the coffee shop, the bell on the door clattering violently. “Mikenna!”

Every eyeball in the place looked at me, including Norman, who scowled. He didn’t like the calm of his place of work disrupted by what he called ‘crazy Texans’. He made his surly attitude clear with the variety of snarky t-shirts in his wardrobe. Today his shirt said:
