Chapter 11

Ashley had already snagged us a booth by the time I made it to the restaurant. It was one of the best burger joints in town, and they served up a feast. I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into one of their famous bacon cheeseburgers served up with seasoned curly fries. I might have drooled. Just a little.

“Hey girl, how was your morning?” Ashley asked as I slid into the booth across from her.

“Interesting.”

“Oh, tell!”

I paused as our server came to take our orders. Ashley ordered the same thing I did, and I was thrilled to see she looked more well-rested than she had in a long time. On the downside, that could mean the energizer bunny had been kicked to the curb. Either way, I needed to know.

“Before I get into my morning, how are things with you?” I asked.

“Good, Dan’s out of town, so I finally got a good night’s rest.”

“Oh, he’s graduated from the nickname and has an actual first name now?”

“Hush, you know me too well. At first, I thought it was just a one-night thing, but over the past few weeks, he just kinda stuck around. I hate to say it, but I might be attached.”

This was front-page news. Ashley was the love them and leave them type. She had high standards, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have a little fun while she searched for the right guy. If Dan was getting referred to by his first name, this could be semi-serious.

“What’s next, moving in together?”

“Dear goodness, no. We’re not that close yet. I just don’t mind having him around. Now, tell me about your press conference.”

“It was a fiasco which I expect from the mayor’s office. They did a quick info dump, and then Josh scuttled out of the room without taking questions. I met an interesting reporter there, Nick Andino...”

“Hold up right there. Do not pass go. You met Nick? Oh my God, is he as yummy as they say he is?” Ashley asked, interrupting me.

I blushed and took a sip of water to give myself a little time to answer. Ashley noticed and narrowed her eyes. I couldn’t hide a single thing from her.

“Some might say he’s attractive. I don’t know about yummy.”

She smirked and held her tongue as our burgers were delivered. Saved by the burger, I thought as I dug in right away. It’s hard to answer questions when your mouth is full, right? I diligently plowed my way through half my fries and burger before stopping to take a drink.

“So, he’s attractive, huh? I’ve heard he’s quite the ladies man,” Ashley said, winking at me.

“I wouldn’t know about that. He seemed nice. Oh, after the presser, I stopped into Anastasia’s store. She’s the best.”

“Nice deflection there, kiddo. I’ll let it go for now, but we’ll be circling back. You can count on it. What did you need to see Anastasia about?”

I told her about the pendant and what I’d been told about being able to sense danger.
