Chapter Fifteen

Jason’s Journal

A Devil’s Bargain

When we arrived in Aria, I did all I that I could for Julie. I brought her to our bedchamber, laying her on our bed. Kevin, Barry, and Julius stood beside me. Barry was as pale as our sheets.

“She... she looks exactly as she did before,” he said, his voice quivering slightly. “Same exact injury, I mean. Even in the same spot.”

Kevin kicked the wall angrily and said, “Damn’t! How could this happen? I though Mamma-Brooks fixed this already! How could the Beast undo hers and the Lunar Necklace’s powers?”

“It was the Spear of Destiny,” I said finally. “Lancelot used it earlier to reopen the old stab wound you gave me three years ago, Kevin. Repeatedly.”

“Really,” Kevin snapped. “Well, it sure looks like you healed quickly, Gardner. Why isn’t she?”

“It’s the same problem as earlier,” I replied. “Number one, she needs a magical kickstarter. But number two, there’s a different type of damage. Lancelot bashed her head hard with that spear, it’s causing the capillaries to burst and hemorrhage. Even if I could jumpstart her third of the Lunar Necklace’s power, it would just be the beginning of an endless cycle. She would be alive, but never awake. Just... existing.”

“How the hell do you know this?” shouted Kevin. “And since when do you have any type of magic? We are losing her all over again! We’re losing another member of our... team.”

“Look,” I said as calm as I possibly could. “I don’t know why I can access my third of the holy magic all of a sudden. But I think it’s because it can only be activated by...”

“What?” said Kevin gritting his teeth.

“It’s love,” said Julius, “isn’t it? You can only control your magic when you concentrate on your love for Julie. Because that’s what drives you.”

“How did you...?” I asked him.

“Well, it’s kind of obvious,” said Julius. “You and her were never too hard to read when you were together. Plus, heaven is powered by God’s love. So, it makes sense that love would be the key.”

“Yeah, I guess it would,” I said. It was hard to believe that Julius used to be a non-believer. He had come so far. “I’ve already used a small part of it to slow down the hemorrhaging. Don’t ask me how I knew to do it, I guess instinct took over. Just like I know what ails her and what won’t help her. Even right now... I can feel her fear and pain... and it’s driving me crazy, because I somehow know all these useless things and none of it can tell me how to save her!”

Kevin took a deep step towards me. “So what? You’re just going to give up?”

“Not a chance,” I said. “Right now, Julie is our only priority. Barry, call Travis and see if he can contact Mrs. Brooks. Julius, call Kane Grimm and see if he knows anything. Kevin, come with me.”

“Why?” Kevin raises his eyebrow. “Where are we going?”

“To see my little brother.”

Kevin and I walked down to the dungeons silently.
