It was a little before 5:00 as we settled at the picnic tables, filled with bowls of spaghetti and meatballs and warm garlic bread. Uncle Mike found a few clean plastic tablecloths and supplied plenty of plates and silverware. The entire crew accepted our invitation to dinner.

Mr. O’ stood at the end of the table and raised his hands to get everyone’s attention.

“It’s great to have you all here with us; thanks for joining us for this meal. The food looks and smells incredible… I’ll say a quick blessing, and then we can have at it!

“Lord, you understand that we sometimes need to see the love you have for us with not just our faith, but sight as well. Thank you for the amazing demonstration of that love you have revealed for us here in Center Springs. When we recall the reason for our gathering here tonight, we humbly confess that we need to feel your embrace in this difficult time. Maria was a beloved friend, sister, and mother who gave the greatest measure of her devotion. Our hearts are thankful for her life, and we pray that her sacrifice will resonate throughout this country for the glory of your kingdom. Amen…”

His amen was echoed by voices all around the table.

There was a hushed atmosphere — I could feel crew members looking at me sympathetically, afraid to talk.

“I don’t know if anybody else is hungry, but those meatballs smell awesome!” I said as enthusiastically as I could, grabbing for the closest platter. “These are my uncle’s specialty — he owns Farro’s Subs… check it out!”

“Yo, thanks, Jimmy!” Uncle Mike yelled from the other end of the table. “If ya wanna sneak in a commercial for the shop on yer interview, that’d be great too!”

The crew started to laugh and add their own jokes, accomplishing the job of lightening the mood.
