âYeah? You get it now? You know who I am?â
Leon did. Of course he did. But it made no sense. The terrible murders, just a few miles from the school, had made national news. Heâd discussed it with his wife, with the lads on site, about how terrible it was. But he hadnât considered for a moment that it might affect him in any way. He let the newspaper fall to the ground and stared at the gunman.
âTell âem to get in the fucking car.â The man gestured to Sky with the gun but she didnât move. Worse, her sister Ocean had joined her now, so that both of them were closer to the gunman than Leon was. And they seemed both to have realised that whatever was happening here was something to be frightened of. Very frightened.
âYou canâtââ Leon began, but the gunman cut him off.
âI need your kids. If you want âem to live, tell them to get in. Otherwise, I shoot you and put âem in myself. You got it?â His nostrils were flaring wide. A vein was standing out on the side of his neck.
It was the immovable object and the irresistible force. Every instinct pushed him forward to protect his daughters, but the gun pointed at his face stopped him with equal strength. The man he should have been â the kind of guy who never took shit from anyone, a guy who could take care of himself and his family â was suddenly gone, and he didnât know how to react. The worst of it was, he believed this man. A man who had shot a police officer and his whole family would just as easily shoot him and his twin daughters. And he was powerless, utterly impotent to stop him.
âGet âem in, if you donât want âem to die.â
The man was sounding increasingly agitated, and now Leon sensed why. With an almost audible whoop he became aware of the scene around him: a busy street with cars streaming by in both directions; the face of a kid from the nearby secondary school, curious as he cruised past the unusual scene on his bike; parents walking their kids home on the other side of the road. This whole thing was surreal.
âFucking hell.â The man suddenly wheeled away, taking the gun with him so that it pointed instead at Ocean. And then he grabbed her, holding the weapon against the side of her head. Leon felt immediate and immense fear. Ocean screamed and Leon let out a yell too, no words, just a howl of terror. Perhaps it stopped the man from firing. Perhaps not.
âLet her go. Please let her go.â He managed the words, just. He held his hands up, begging, as if they might stop the bullet.
The man glanced at him but continued to drag Ocean towards the open car door. She was too scared to resist, the man too strong. The panic was vivid in her eyes, but she did what he said.
