Chapter Fifteen

The tavern was quiet. Not quiet in the sense that there was a certain calmness through it, but quiet in the sense that there were not very many people in it, and the few people that were there were sitting and eating or drinking without having much in the way of conversation. I glanced at Asi, curious about why she had chosen this place and wondering what she might have to say about it.

“I don’t come around here often, but I remember this place being nice and quiet,” she explained. “So just have a seat. This way, you know who’s here, you know who’s not, and there are plenty of open places where we can have a conversation without having to worry about anybody listening in.”

I looked around until I found a darkened corner, and I made my way over and took a seat. In my experience with Asi, I had learned that when she made a suggestion like that, it was more than just a suggestion.

It wasn’t long before she returned, carrying two mugs of ale. She set one down in front of me and then frowned as she glanced around the tavern herself.

“Did you choose this one because there aren’t any minstrels here?” I asked.

She laughed. “Do you think that matters all that much to me?”

I looked around, taking a long, slow sip of my drink, and then I shrugged. “I honestly don’t have much of an idea. I figured that maybe you had chosen it because you wanted to avoid certain people here.”

“Avoid the Guild,” she said. “Considering what you were saying. Care to tell me what’s been going on? I thought we were supposed to meet so that we could deal with some of the fabrications, and so that we could start our lessons.”

I grimaced.

“What?” she asked, looking over her glass at me. “Don’t tell me that you don’t want to do that anymore.”

“No,” I said. “It’s not that at all. It’s more that I might have already started.”

“What do you mean, you might have?”

I filled her in on what I was doing with Matherin, and she just shook her head.

“So am I supposed to be offended by this, or are you going to tell me that I’m reading too much into it?”

“It was unintentional on my part. I went to Matherin to ask him about lessons, and we just started talking.”

“And now you’re going to meet with the Guild?”

“That was definitely unintentional,” I said. “He found me.”

Asi started to laugh.

“Go on,” I said.

“It’s just you,” she said. “The way that you are going about this. I suppose I shouldn’t be terribly surprised that you are having such difficulty. You’re new to all of this.”

“As I’m constantly reminded,” I muttered. I took another drink of the ale. “But it’s not even just that.”

“Oh, I know,” she said. “It’s not just that, because there are other things that you have been doing, other ways that you have been struggling, and you aren’t entirely sure what to do about it.
