WHETHER THE FELINE INSTINCT IS TO HUNT IT OR FLEE FROM IT, cats can be trained to live alongside other animals as long as alternative appropriate outlets for hunting instincts are provided and the cat’s perceived security within the home is always optimal. Dogs have long been described as man’s best friend, but with systematic desensitization and counterconditioning and allowing the cat to always be in control of how close to get to the dog, the cat may come to rival the owner as the dog’s best friend—it is not unheard of for dogs and cats that have been appropriately introduced and taught to enjoy each other’s company to curl up together in the same bed. Some cats even accompany their family dogs on their walks. The training techniques of systematic desensitization and counterconditioning are not confined to learning about living things—they are equally useful for training cats to cope with all sorts of objects they may encounter in their lives but do not necessarily feel immediately comfortable with. The cat carrier is one such example and is the topic of the next chapter.
