An hour later Sofia found herself glaring at a castle guardsman, hands on her hips, her glamoured armor changed to resemble a royal gown in blue and black, trimmed with silver.

The city of Piedson, capital of Cervira, sat at the base of the northern side of the Northern Andurien Mountains, near one of the few easily traversed paths through the mountains and into Andurien. The city itself was short and squat, with low stone walls and massive wooden gates at the three entry points. Their airship docks were limited, with theirs taking up one of six berths while four of the other five were empty.

As they had traveled the city from the docks toward the castle, Sofia had been surprised by how run-down it looked, especially since its primary income source was in mining the mineral-rich Andurien Mountains. The short walls also confused her since it was, as far as she knew, a thriving city.

At least until Corym had leaned over and explained that Piedson was in fact two cities. The trade hub out here and a secondary, slightly larger city inside the mountains. A city that was supposedly very well fortified.

Now that we’ve made it to the castle gates, a simple guard refuses to allow us entry.

“Look, like I told you, I am Princess Sofia—”

“And like I told you, not only are you a princess of a place I don’t recognize, no one is bringing a lizardfolk inside. Be thankful you aren’t being thrown in the stocks for bringing one into the city,” the guard interrupted.

“Betcha I can shoot his cloak right off his shoulder,” Lyse grinned.

“Pfff. That’s nothing. Bet I can shoot the feather off the top of his helmet without even grazing the metal,” Feral countered.

“Not helping,” Sofia growled.

“And I bet we can have you all in chains within the next five minutes.” The guard shrugged, his hand tightening on his sword handle.

“Enough.” Verald pushed his way to the front. “Lieutenant, that would be more than unwise. Believe me, they will not go quietly, and they’re very skilled. If you won’t let us in, do me a favor. Send two runners. One to the king asking him to gather his council and another to General Shozen. Have whoever you send tell the general that her nephew Verald has returned with one extremely interesting tale.”

The lieutenant frowned. “I’ll send one runner to the general. She can decide if it’s worthwhile or not. I’m not bothering the king with this.”

Verald nodded, and the runner was dispatched into the city, not the castle, while their group stepped off to the side to wait. About an hour later, the runner returned and motioned for them to follow. Sofia nodded, and their group set off.

It took about ten minutes of weaving through the short buildings before they reached a two-story tavern.

And not one of us missed the multiple archers stationed on the roofs of the other buildings.

Standing outside the tavern was a formidable-looking human woman. She stood about five foot eight and had a stocky, muscular build.
