Make sure the panels, either plywood or OSB, are labeled APA RATED SHEATHING. For maximum racking resistance panels should be installed horizontally across the wall studs as shown in the illustration below.

Nails should be spaced 6 inches on center along the panel edges and 12 inches on center into interior studs with a minimum nail length of 1½ inches.

Roofs may be sheathed with either APA RATED SHEATHING or with APA RATED STURD-I-FLOOR panels.

For rafters spaced 16 inches on center panel span ratings may be 20/0, 24/0, 24/16 or greater. For rafters spaced 24 inches on center panel span ratings may be 24/16, 32/16, or greater. For rafters spaced 32 inches on center panel span ratings may be 32/16, 40/20, or greater.

Panels should be fastened with 8d nails spaced 6 inches on center along panel edges and 12 inches on center into interior rafters with minimum nail lengths of 1½ inches.

Closer nail spacings may be required in high wind zones. Check with your local building code official.
