4 Development

In this chapter you’ll learn some advanced strategies in the bidding, including doubles, slams and basic conventions, and more techniques for evaluating a bridge hand. As before, prior to learning these new skills make sure you have plenty of practice. An instructive exercise is to play all four hands yourself. When you’re ready, you’ll enjoy developing your game, taking it to a stimulating and challenging new level.

Double

‘Double’ is arguably the most useful bid in bridge. Two types of double are used: their meanings are opposite so it is vital to know which one your partner has bid. Like any other bid, three passes following a double are required to end the auction.
