The Long Now Foundation

Established in 1996, the Long Now Foundation29 promotes thinking about the future on a grand scale. The foundation seeks to counterbalance the present orientation in vogue today with a future time perspective that promotes very long-term social, economic, and environmental responsibility. The foundation took its name from the longest period of time that the founders believe people can reasonably grasp. For the foundation, the long now is ten thousand years. Who knows? In ten thousand years, people may be looking hundreds of thousands of years into the future, and the foundation may be renamed the Short Now Foundation. For now ten thousand years is the long now.

Among the foundation’s activities are creating a ten-thousand-year clock and working to reformat contemporary dating measurements. The ten-thousand-year clock will be mechanically powered and will keep time relatively accurately for the next ten thousand years. The foundation has built working prototypes; they plan to entomb a full-size version in a mountaintop in Nevada. In regard to dating, the foundation encourages the use of five digits for years. In their calendar, the year 2008 becomes 02008, a format that suggests a great vista of time ahead of us and avoids the dreaded Y10K computer bug, a descendent of the Y2K millennium computer bug that occurred in the year 2000. We will encounter the bug in a mere eight thousand years, when the four digits of the year 9999 roll over to the five digits of the year 10,000. From the perspective of the transcendental future, it is never too early to plan ahead.
