The fire died down and the night was cold. Toby sat in Ed’s lap holding her hand. Allie leaned her head on Will. The Conductor looked skyward to the moon and Mackenzie and Mike were still conked out. Coals went from black to red to orange in a slow dance that made me sleepy. I stared into the heat until my face was warm and then rounded everybody up and herded them into the tents and sleeping bags. They were so tired they didn’t even notice I stayed outside and zipped them in, except Mackenzie, who flailed her arm through the flap, hyperventilating, fighting both me and her claustrophobia. An offering of Sir Tycho Brahe, an old gummy worm, and a compromise of half-zipped tent flap got her to go to bed. I walked to the ledge where the couple jumped and looked out at the gorge covered in the yellow shadow of the sky.

“Hello again my orbital oracles up there,” I said into my walkie-talkie. “Make sure to cast your telescope vision to the stars. Whatever you do, don’t look back down here [blip] All you’ll see is a blood stain. One I’ll never be able to clean up for you. Emotion level for the day: Lonely Porcupine on a Pool Float. Robot out [blip]”

I toed some dirt off the cliff edge. White scales from the Cloud Maker still pollinated through the valley gore. Reflecting light, drifting mischievous beyond the cold ridgeline in sparkled mists. I could almost hear them humming. Calculating some secret work. The world never takes a break from trying to kill you sometimes. That was alright though. I had secret work of my own to do.
