Chapter 20

Lucian

Leaving Riley behind is like having my right arm cut off. It feels wrong to be sitting on my own, heading to a business meeting that could hold the key to my brother’s future. It was hard leaving her and I try to shift my head back into business because this is too important to let slide.

It doesn’t take long to reach the center of town and the offices of a man who operates in the gutter. I was interested when he reached out and know he wants something; I just need to discover what the price will be.

The car stops outside a huge skyscraper and as usual, the door opens and my chief guard looks at me through narrow eyes. “Sir.”

I step onto the sidewalk and shiver. Bloody rain. It’s why I live in Miami; I never could stand the cold and I’m keen to get back there.

I nod to Sam and say tersely, “Just you. Elias told me it will be a closed meeting and only one guard will be allowed.”

I can tell Sam’s uncomfortable with this because it could be a trap but I know Elias and money is his driving force, so I say tersely, “It’ll be fine, if not, we’ll deal with him as only we know how.”

Sam nods and I see the glint in his eye that I know well. Like me, he almost wishes for conflict because we excel at it. I may be a sadistic bastard in the bedroom but I’m worse in public. I think nothing of ending a man’s life and the more painful the better. It’s like a drug and I sometimes wonder if my sins will catch up with me in the most horrific of ways, which is why I take the precautions I do.

As soon as we step inside the building, I am met by a nervous looking woman who can’t appear to look me in the eye. She says anxiously, “Welcome, Mr. Romano, please follow me, Mr. Stanford is waiting.”

I follow her to a bank of elevators and she takes the one on the far right. I’m guessing this is his own private one because of the crowd waiting outside the others and that nobody makes to join us as she steps inside. I feel the looks that follow me wherever I go and I’ve become accustomed to them. Maybe it’s the bank of guards that surround me, or the fact I look like a cold-blooded killer, dressed all in black and not making eye contact with anyone.

It suits me to keep them away, so I play up to the image and keep my expression blank and say very few words. This is no exception because there is no conversation as we head to Elias’s office on the top floor.

I can tell the woman’s nervous because her breathing is fast and she plays with her belt. I am hoping her nerves are for no other reason than she feels the threat because if this is a trap, god help them.
