Chapter 11

With the Trine’s plans in place, Patrick had nothing to do but wait.

He’d done his part in organising the ambush—collecting Hank Judge from his post at the police station and delivering him to the Showgrounds.

It was sad, what Jin had done to the man. The vampire had taken the constable’s wits and completely blitzed them. There was hardly anything left of his personality, but soon enough, it wouldn’t matter. The moment Jin died, the compulsion would break, freeing not only Hank, but the entire town.

Patrick was supposed to watch the perimeter of the Showgrounds while the coven did their work, but he felt a strong desire to go to the pavilion at the rear.

Heading inside, he smiled when he saw Holly. She was arranging a variety of colourfully knitted dolls inside a glass case, while people milled about, looking at the displays that’d been filled with various other crafts entered into the annual Show competitions.

Blinking, he broke out of his daze and moved towards her. “Hey.”

Holly looked up at his approach. “Hey!” She seemed relieved that he was there.

“What are you doing?”

“Does this look good to you?” she asked with a sigh. “I have zero experience arranging…knitted clowns. Believe it or not, it’s an actual category. Terrifying, I know.”

He raised his eyebrows and inspected the dolls. “It looks fine to me. But why are you…?”

“Apparently Samantha Dunne bailed,” Holly told him. “She was supposed to oversee the setup, but she didn’t come in yesterday and now everything is behind. Judging was supposed to be happening now, but it’s been pushed to this arvo.” She locked the glass case and rolled her eyes. “Hence me getting stuck with the clowns. No one else wanted them since clowns are the main characters in horror movies.”

“Yeah…” Patrick looked around the pavilion, even though he knew he wouldn’t see a single witch. “But what are you doing here?”

“Pfft. I’m asking myself the same question. I could’ve just bought a ticket, but Fiona convinced me to volunteer. I suppose she thought it’d do me good to become a part of the community since I plan to stay and all.”

Patrick’s brow furrowed. “Who?”

“Fiona. Have you seen her?”

Patrick paused. “Fiona O’Riley?”

“Yeah. She was supposed to meet me here. This whole volunteering thing was meant to be a cover to practice using my…you know what with the animals and stuff.”

“Fiona O’Riley has been teaching you magic?”

“Yeah.” Her frown deepened. “I thought you knew.”

He snorted. “No. No, I didn’t.”

“Well, she sought me out. Apparently, Aunt Hannah was teaching her how to read tarot before she died. They were friends, and since she had her own troubles with the Trine, she reached out to me.”

“She—” The words died in Patrick’s throat as the entire pavilion fell silent. At least thirty people all stood frozen to the spot, their expressions blank.

“What’s going on?” Holly murmured, glancing up at Patrick.

He didn’t get time to reply as the crowd began to move, turning in unison and filing out of the pavilion, still clutching their showbags.
