Over a cocktail the lovers cuddled in the living room. They were unusually distant on this night, both lost in their own thoughts. Chester was trying out different plans in his mind. Rita was rehearsing her concerns.

Finally, Rita, couldn’t take it anymore. She blurted out, “Chester, you have to be careful.”

The startled detective jumped, “What?”

Chester and Rita sat looking at each other. “I’m sorry, Rita.”

“Chester, what would I do without you?”

“I hope you don’t think I will you give you a lot of good ideas for a time like that,” Chester said with a grin.

Rita took a mock swing at him. “Oh, you. You are hopeless.”

“Honey, you know how I feel about you.”

“Then why can’t you say it?”

“Okay, you want to hear it? I love you, Rita. You excite me more than any woman ever has. You make my blood run hot. You call forth emotions in me I didn’t know I had. You are the essence of me. You are my heart. Now, I have said it.”

Rita sat on the couch looking deep into his eyes. Tears ran down her cheeks. Slowly her face turned to a sweet smile. She stroked his hand and swallowed hard.

“Rita, you are the scent of a spring rain. You are the sound of children at play. You are a cool breeze at the end of the hottest day of the year. In short you are everything that is good, and natural, and clean.”

“Now, you have said it. Chester, I feel like I have always loved you. You are the key that unlocks all that is good in me. Kiss me, Darling.”

Chester took her in his arms. He kissed her like he had never kissed her before. The world of trouble and cares melted in the heat of their embrace. Their hearts beat as one.
