66  The “intimate taste” (dhawq ) of imagining (CI, 221–22) depends on the himma. Combining this notion of intimacy with that of William James (note 40), it seems we can become intimate with an image or a thing in a sensuous way only when we have abandoned the rational account of it. Intimacy, whether in Sappho, Corbin, or James, depends on the experience of the particular as such; this gives us a new way of understanding Aristotle’s phrase “It would seem that experience of particular things is a sort of courage” (Nic. Eth. III.1116b 3).

67  “Esse is percipi ,” from George Berkeley, was the motto of my Eranos lecture in 1976, where its psychological significance is discussed further (Eranos Yearbook 45 [1976]; reprinted as Egalitarian Typologies versus the Perception of the Unique, Eranos Lectures 4 [Dallas: Spring Publications, 1986]).
