The bowl clatters to the metal work surface, and I lean against it, dropping my head into my hands. We were so close to bringing Donald back. The confusion in his eyes when he searched the room replays through my mind. He’d been scared, wanting to know where his friend was.

What spell did we miss? What could we have done differently?

Anger simmers in my gut. Why would someone do this to Donald? What twisted mind thought up something so terrible? And why did it have to be my power that gave them the chance to enact this horror?

Frustrated, I slam my hands down on the table, and it buckles, the frame too stressed from Donald’s struggles to withstand more. It crumples to the floor, the legs sticking out at weird angles and black sludge splattering outward. The bowl rolls across the floor, leaving a trail of black slime in its wake. It looks like a mechanical spider from some sci-fi movie, squashed by its enemies.

I was so confident that putting the butterflies back into Donald was the right way to go, but I just messed things up, again.

“You okay there, kiddo?” Flint asks, his hand settling on my shoulder.

“Did you get his core?” I ask, still staring at the mess I made.

He gives me a reassuring squeeze. “Yeah, he’s safe and clean of bad magic.”

I nod, unable to look at the others in the room. “I’ll go get a mop.”

Silence follows me out to the viewing room, where I find Sharpe sitting in one of the chairs, his elbows on his knees.

He glances up as I enter. “Is it done?”

“Yeah, it’s done.” I force a smile. “Your help today was appreciated.”

He shakes his head. “Will it always be like this? Now that demons are out to the public?”

“I certainly hope not.” I sit next to him. “This is a unique issue.”

“Like that guy who blew up Fulcrum was unique?” He turns to fix me with a sharp stare. “Like the succubus who took those people hostage was unique?”

My laugh holds a bitter edge. “I seem to bring the worst to Clearhelm, don’t I?”

He sighs and looks away. “People who do great good exist because there are people who do great evil. Most of the time, everyone else gets to live peacefully oblivious to the wars that surround them.”

“Not you, though.” I mirror his pose, propping my elbows on my knees. “Why did you decide to become a detective?”

He stares at the glass wall meant for viewing, though the room behind it remains dark and empty. “When I was twenty, I was found in the middle of a house fire, with no memory of how I got there. I only had minor burns, so the theory is that I ran into the house after the fire had subsided and passed out from smoke inhalation. Everything before that point is just flashes, but I’m told it was my family’s house, and that I was the sole survivor of an arson attack. I’ve never regained my memory, and the police never found the person who set the fire.
