Chapter 11

Not much was said as the four of us waited for Ben to come back. I’d worried one thumbnail down, and Razzy hadn’t even corrected me. I was working hard on the second, when I heard the door to my apartment open. The four of us turned to look at Ben as one, and I was not prepared for him to laugh. A rush of relief ran through me as he closed the door and wiped his eyes.

“Oh, my goodness. If you could see yourselves right now,” he said, wheezing with laughter. “My four guilty convicts.”

Gus stepped forward and sat with his head bowed.

“Pops, I’m really sorry. I told them it wasn’t a good idea, but I didn’t do enough to stop them. This one’s on me. Don’t punish them, I’m the one who should be blamed. I was the man of the house and I let them go ahead with it.”

My lip quirked as I tried not to giggle. Gus sounded so mournful and responsible. Razzy’s eyes blazed as she looked between Gus and Ben. She walked in front of Gus and sat at Ben’s feet.

“You don’t have to take the fall for me. I’ll own it. I wanted to see if we could catch the burglar in the act. It was my idea.”

Rudy sighed and walked forward.

“It was my fault.”

“How about you, Hannah? Are you going to fall on your own sword and take the blame?” Ben asked, amusement lighting up his eyes.

“Of course. After all, I’m the one who drove everyone there. I know it wasn’t the smartest thing, but we tried our best to be safe about it.”

Ben scrubbed his hand over the back of his hair and shook his head before kneeling down in front of the cats.

“Gus, I appreciate what you’re trying to do. You guys aren’t in trouble. I worry about each one of you and it stopped my heart when I realized all four of you were in danger. This burglar may have already killed one person. I couldn’t imagine what I would do if all four of you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

He stroked each on the back, and purring filled the silence in the living room. Rudy gave a little hop and raced around the room.

“We’re not in trouble, yay,” he said, batting around a toy.

Ben sat next to me on the couch and took my hand in his. Razzy and Gus herded Rudy back to the bedroom to give us some privacy.

“Hannah, I know you’re an independent person. That’s one thing I love most about you. I don’t want to change you, but I can’t tell you how I felt when we cruised past and saw your Blazer.”

“I’m sorry, Ben. We were bored here, missing you, and it sounded like a good idea. I shouldn’t have put the cats in danger like that. If you should be mad at anyone, it’s me.”

He stroked my hair before kissing me on the tip of the nose and resting his forehead against mine.
