TEMPERANCE (SELF-CONTROL]

We live in a world of runaway desire, of folks chasing their every addiction. The Bible, though, teaches the virtue of temperance, or self-control.

In the Proverbs Solomon cautioned against overindulgence, writing, “If you find honey, eat just enough—too much of it, and you will vomit” (25:16). He continued, characterizing the man who lacks self-control as “a city whose walls are broken through” (v. 28). Seems about like today’s America, doesn’t it?

In the New Testament Paul urged us not to indulge every desire, but to “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (Rom. 12:1). To that end he wrote that we should put on Christ, clothe ourselves in his self-control, and “not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh” (13:14). Likewise, Peter wrote that followers of Christ should be sober-minded so that we might avoid the Devil who “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

What about the unvirtuous who lack self-control? Paul warned, “Do not be deceived: neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:9–10 RSV). See? The inability to practice self-control in every area—sexuality, the use of money, the use of wine—leads to death, destruction, and ultimate torment.
