Back in the attic, Ethan was brisk, running through what would happen next. The Director had agreed to give her a couple of days off before she tried another performance. She’d be sent a schedule. Then he was gone, leaving a stagehand to show her out.

As Juliet walked home, she couldn’t work out how to feel about anything that had happened. All her emotions seemed to come with a yes but attached to them. The one straightforwardly good thing was that the time off meant there was no need to mention the funeral; she hadn’t been sure whether Ethan would approve of her dipping back into her old life.

Back at the house, she found an envelope addressed to her on the hall table. Inside was the list of days and times Ethan had mentioned.

A voice spoke from behind her. ‘That’s the second one. He must be keen.’ Sally was standing in the kitchen doorway, her hands wrapped round a mug.

‘He?’ Juliet’s thoughts leaped to Ethan.

‘That nice young man with the enticingly broad shoulders who called by a few days ago. I assume that’s from him.’

‘Oh, yes.’ Juliet felt around for a lie that wouldn’t come back to bite her. ‘He’s just someone I used to know. I’ll get in touch when I have a chance.’

‘Quite right,’ Sally said. ‘Keep him hanging. It’ll make him keener.’ She took a sip of her tea. ‘You’re in demand at the moment. Eugene was asking about you earlier.’ She nodded towards the kitchen. ‘Kettle’s just boiled if you fancy a cup of tea and a natter.’

Juliet was on the edge of accepting when she remembered the warning Danes had given her.

You are the secret.

‘I’ve got a few things to do,’ she said. ‘Sorry.’
